Moving away from the half-hearted Gonzo journalism, a lot of amazing people have contacted me this year to help spread the word about the comics that they’re working on, and though it sometimes takes me a hundred years to reply I’m always more than happy to help. The always-awesome Marsha Cooke put me in touch with writer Rachel Pandich about her creator-owned comic Aspire, illustrated by Ashley Lanni. Issues 1 and 2 of Aspire have been out for a while already but in light of recent comic news I’d say that they really tap into the zeitgeist of our community at the moment, featuring a female, non-white superhero. At a time when DC are getting more press coverage for their treatment of female characters than their relaunch of an entire universe and Marvel are making headlines with the introduction of Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man credit should be given to Pandich and Lanni for anticipating the desires of the comic-reading community. For anybody that has been making noise online about subjects of sex or race in comics you could do a lot worse than supporting an all-female creative team tackling both issues in their first professional comic together. The strip itself reminded me of Daniel Clifford and Gary Bainbridge’s Sugar Glider, focussing on the intimate world of a teenager trying to establish a heroic identity in the face of familial tension and general discouragement. The great thing about catching this team at the start of their careers is that you can literally see Lanni’s art grow from page to page, and Pandich got my vote the second that she referenced Fishbone. Rachel Pandich will also be contributing to the upcoming Womanthology, so hopefully in a market where women reading comics grow more vocal everyday this will equate to the support needed to complete the planned eight issues of Aspire.

Gentle Giants rescues and adopts more than 1,000 giant breed and small breed dogs each year from all across America. All of their dogs are socialized and behaviorally trained, and live communally together in their home.

Although fans best recognize Terrance as Repo!'s charismatic, creepy narrator, GraveRobber, he also provided the comic book inspired artwork that appears throughout the movie and has been independently producing his own comics series, The Molting, since September of 2009. The Molting details the dark struggles of a dysfunctional, Southern Californian family in the late 1990s.

In conjunction with the release of the fourth installment of The Molting, its author is debuting a new project: "Painting A Still Life With Terrance Zdunich" is a series of online how-to videos, a seemingly innocent collection of art lessons from "The Tutor". Pupils will notice, however, that their instructor's methods are...less than traditional and, like the lives of his characters, deceptively darker than imagined.

The first episode of "Painting A Still Life With Terrance Zdunich" premieres at TheMoltingComic.com today, Tuesday, June 1, 2010. A new lesson will be released every Tuesday until this fourteen-part series is complete. Don't be late for class, students!

Marc Webb Chosen To Direct Next Chapter of the Acclaimed Series

-Spider-Man to Climb into Theaters in Summer, 2012 -

CULVER CITY, Calif., January 20, 2010 – Marc Webb, the director of the Golden Globe nominated Best Picture(500) Days of Summer, will direct the next chapter in the Spider-Man franchise, set to hit theaters summer 2012, it was jointly announced today by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Written by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work closely with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project, which will begin production later this year.

From the pages of Dynamite Entertainment's The Boys comes a mini-series about overwhelmingly debauched superheroes written by Garth Ennis (Preacher, FURY, Punisher: MAX) with covers by original Boys artist Darrick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, Wolverine, FURY) and interior art by John McCrea. These issues focus on the Superheroes depicted in The Boys on a trip to HEROGASM, an event all the supes run away to every once in a while in order to relieve the stress brought about by their daily heroics. And how does the legion of powered crimefighters the world over find release? In an incredibly literal, drug fueled orgy kind of way, of course. Panel after panel of comic gold aside, this would not make for much of a story. Luckily for us, Ennis weaves a tale of politics, corporate greed, sex (including giant rock penises), power, control, money, drugs, kidnapping, brutality, and more shenanigans than you can shake a stick at, to great effect. And, of course, we have the Boys, who are on location to carry out a very important mission, the details of which you will have to read to discover, but rest assured the consequences of their actions will be carried over into the main storyline. All of this combined makes for a great little diversion, bristling with hilarity and intrigue that you should not hesitate to pick up.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1910

“Mankind Is Kept Alive By Monstrous Deeds” From Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill comes the fourth graphic novel in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series. If your only knowledge of this series is derived from that silly little bit of celluloid starring Sean Connery and Stuart Townsend, first, accept our deepest and most sincere condolences, and second, get out there and buy The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's Century: 1910! While my favorite volume so far has been the last, the so-called Black Dossier, not one has failed to titillate, thrill, shock, and otherwise entertain, and 1910 is no exception. Chock full of references, historical, literary, and otherwise, for those in the know, this latest story of Wilhelmina Murray, Alan Quartermain and their ever-changing roster of cohorts is a rollicking ride of invisibles, apocalypses, serial killers, magicks most sinister, pirates, and, well, we'll leave the rest for you to discover. A warning, though: if you haven't read the rest of the series, the way this one ends may seem somewhat lackluster. So, really your best bet is to just buy them all and start at square one. Anyone who's read one of Moore's comics (V for Vendetta, Watchmen) already knows that not only the story, but also the dialogue are top notch. The reader can also expect to be more than a little pleased by O'Neill's simple, yet beautifully detailed pencils. The entire affair is infused with a sense of intelligence, humor, and good old fashioned adventure of which the comics medium is always in great need. Do yourself a favor and follow Jenny Diver's (Oh, lord, just wait and see) example and dive head first into one of the best stories you are likely to read this year.

"You are born of the dead; Just like me." Frankenstein's Womb, the most recent in the Apparat line of graphic novellas by Warren Ellis, tells the story of the birth of the future. Well, the early Nineteenth Century's future, our present. The tale is told throughout time, but both begins and holds its base in 1816 with Mary soon-to-be-Shelly Wollenstonecraft Godwin, Percy Shelly, and her pregnant stepsister Claire Clairmont travelling through Germany. It is here that they find Castle Frankenstein, which Mary enters, and a story of alchemy, electricity, destiny, and the origins of today is conveyed to her by the monster that made her famous, Frankenstein. "The future, seen through an old windowpane." Like so much that he writes, especially within Avatar's Apparat line, Ellis is more concerned here with The Idea than The Story, which makes Frankenstein's Womb something of a disappointment the first time you read it, unlike his previous Crecy, which was a gas from the very first read. Fortunately, The Idea is enough to make the lack of story worthwhile, and upon a second or third reading, it's all a bit clearer and makes for a much more satisfying read. You come to realize that The Idea is The Story and actually worthier for it. While it is certainly not the first thing I would recommend to an Ellis-virgin, it has grown on me and I cannot help but be proud that it lives on my shelves.

STAR WARS in concert

Anthony Daniels clad in an all black tuxedo and metallic gold vest took the stage amidst a sea of lights, lasers, smoke and fire to narrate between the symphonic renditions of the music from STAR WARS featuring key characters (including his own C3PO) and plot moments illustrated by massive video screening filled with synched montages from all 6 films that got my midichlorians all tingly. Presented in two parts with a 20 minute intermission ended with a sustained standing ovation. Simply a must for geeks of all ages.

Terrance Zdunich's THE MOLTING; thoughts.

Terrance Zdunich's (Repo! The Genetic Opera) The Molting 12 Issue Maxi-Series is officially in full swing. And we here at Movement Magazine couldn't be more excited.

The first issue introduces us to our cast... and then proceeds to almost immediately rob us of those cast members. But it does it with style and enough promise to make you anxious for the next installment.

The story begins at a court hearing to determine the fate of the newly orphaned Deveraux's, being the sub-eponymous "Guilty Suzie" and her older brother, Tony. They end up in the care of their balding ginger uncle, Henry, and their morbidly obese aunt, Melinda, who's bound to a wheelchair and apparently part banshee. (You'll see what I mean the first time she takes to wailing. The wailing whale, ha! I kill me.)

Things don't look good when the Deveraux siblings as Henry and Melinda almost immediately show their true colors, rifling through the late Mr. and Mrs. Deveraux's belongings, and poor Tony ends up getting clobbered while defending little sister Suzie.

All of this is done with an overarching monologue from the state that keeps in time with the event of the story to great affect, and the art is riddled with visual cues in nearly every panel. I'm especially fond of Suzie's hair during a particularly traumatic event towards the end of the issue. Oh yeah, did I mention that things keep going straight downhill for those kids? I won't ruin it for you, but to say it is well worth the fifteen minutes to read it, and the wait to get the next issue. And, of course, the dollars necessary to get your hands on the twisted little beauty.

And keep your fingers crossed that we'll see a second issue soon!

Serenity Rose Vol. 2, in print, this December, IN COLOR

“When you’re a witch with night terrors, you might just start conjuring unspeakable monsters in your sleep. That’s what’s happening to Serenity Rose, noted witch, artist, and social-phobic, in the much-anticipated second volume of Serenity Rose by Aaron Alexovich (Kimmie66, Confessions of a Blabbermouth).

In Serenity Rose Volume Two: Goodbye, Crestfallen, due out from SLG Publishing in December 2009, Serenity is doing her best to stay awake, but if that’s not enough to make her crack, the government goons hassling her, the freaked-out tourists ogling her, and the sadistic blond witch that’s been following her will! Add into that some heavy friendship drama and the past coming back to haunt her, and it’s no wonder the stress is just about killing Sera. Can she get her head on straight before she brings the whole town down with her?

‘I wanted to seriously push myself art-wise, and tell a tight, focused, very personal story with a lot of heavy horror atmosphere and some intense, bizarre action scenes,’ said Alexovich. ‘I think people who liked the first book will be really surprised by this one. Mid-Ohio Comic Con Recap!

Columbus, Ohio certainly knows how to take care of its nerds.

This past weekend, October 3rd and 4th, The Greater Columbus Convention Center played host to the 29th annual Mid-Ohio-Con. On hand were a bevy of comics and media guests, including Ray Park (Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I, Toad in the first X-Men film, Snake Eyes in this summer's live action GI Joe, and currently part of the cast of TV's Heroes fourth season), James Kyson Lee (Ando, Hiro's bestest bud from NBC's Heroes), and Daniel Logan (who played a young Boba Fett in Star Wars Episode II.)

Dozens of writers and artists, big name and entirely independent alike, were gathered in Exhibit Hall E, hawking their creations, chatting with fans and peers, sketching, snapping photos, signing their great works, and generally having a grand time of it, including Mark Texeira (one of my favorite pencillers during the 1990s,) Joe Jusko, Herb Trimpe, Marv Wolfman, Michael Golden, Bernie Wrightson, Sean Forney, Lora Innes, David Mack, Todd Nauck, Len Wein, Chris Sprouse, and many, many more.

And if you were missing a few key issues of the Phalanx Covenant, Old Man Logan, Transmetropolitan, The Invisibles, The 'Nam, Spidey, Kevin Smith's current run on Batman, you name it -- you would have been hard pressed to NOT find everything you were looking for. And then some, all thanks to a rather impressive collection of vendors, ranging from those specializing in collectibles, accessories, video games, CCGs, Vader's 501st Legion, comic books (of course,) et cetera et cetera ad infinitum.

One of my favorite little hot spots this year was Avatar's booth, which was full to overflowing with back and current issues of most of their popular series, including Warren Ellis' Doktor Sleepless, Anna Mercury, Ignition City, and Black Summer; Garth Ennis' Chronicles of Wormwood and Crossed; Jamie Delano's Narcopolis and loads more. Now in its twenty-ninth year, Mid-Ohio-Con is one of America’s longest-running and most successful comic book and pop-culture conventions, carrying on a fun and family-oriented tradition of bringing fans of all ages together with leading comic book writers and artists, film and television stars and creators, and publishers and retailers from across the nation.

September 17, 2009 – Star Wars™: In Concert is a unique multi-media event featuring music from all six of John Williams’ epic Star Wars scores. As part of its worldwide tour, it will play October 29, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Narrated live by Anthony Daniels (the actor who portrayed C-3PO in all six films), the production features a full symphony orchestra and choir, accompanied by specially edited footage from the films displayed on a three-story-tall, high-definition LED super-screen – one of the largest ever put on tour. The live music and film elements are synchronized in order to create a full multi-media, one-of-kind Star Wars experience.

“We’ve taken the key themes from the music and cut together all the images that fit with each theme, so you can really get a sense of how the music played into the images,” said George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars Saga. “The whole soundtrack is a testament to John Williams’ creativity and his extraordinary ability to enhance the emotional aspects of the films.”

“Creating the music for the Star Wars films has been an exciting and wonderful experience for me, and I therefore have derived particular pleasure in assembling a compendium of themes from all of the films to be presented in Star Wars in Concert,” said Williams. “The editors at Lucas film have created original film montages to accompany each of the musical selections, and in the process, I believe that a singular and unique Star Wars experience has been born.”

“This event has been crafted to present Star Wars from many points of view; for the first time, the full dramatic sweep of Williams’ iconic scores can be heard performed live in one evening,” said Another Planet Touring Producer Spencer Churchill.” “The show is a new way of experiencing the epic scope of the saga.”

Accompanying the concert is an exclusive exhibit of Star Wars costumes, props, artifacts, production artwork and specially created behind-the-scenes videos from the Lucasfilm Archives. Many of these pieces are leaving Skywalker Ranch for the first time. The exhibit features many classic fan favorite artifacts, as well as several new and never-before-seen items, including:

·Full costumes for Jedi Masters Kit Fisto and Plo Koon will be on display.

·For the first time ever, pages from John Williams' original hand-written sheet music for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace will be exhibited for the public.

·Also on display will be various never-before-seen props from the films, including blasters and helmets from Coruscant, Tatooine and other iconic Star Wars locations.

Lament, True Believers...

For the Mighty Marvel House of Ideas has been consumed by a planet devourer that Galactus would be hard-pressed to keep up with: Disney.

It remains to be seen how this change will effect Marvel's output, but one worries that the merger might hinder the comic giant's creativity, leaving us with dumbed-down two dimensional children's stories.

We can only hope that, as both companies have stated, Disney will actually keep their fingers out of Marvel's day to day operations and let them keeping creating the great stories we've been reading for the past few years.

And as far as the movie side of things go... well, so long as Miley Cyrus and Whatever-Their-Names-Are Jonas aren't going to start taking on leading roles as our favorite spandex-clad heroes, then this could actually be a good thing. Sure, Disney fails from time to time, but no one can deny that they hit it out of the park just as often, (the first years of Miramax, anyone?) and if Marvel really will get to maintain creative control and make movies the way they've been making them these past few years, then yippee for a huge new weapon in their arsenal.

So, we'll keep an eye out and hope that the House of Mouse doesn't bring down the House of Ideas like a ...house of cards?

Excelsior, indeed.

DEL REY TO PUBLISH PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, announced today Mike Krahulik, artist and half of the creative duo behind the hit gaming and geek culture-based webcomic Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) as the variant cover artist for Issue 1 of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman, on sale in November.

Penny Arcade is the online phenomenon which debuted in 1998 whose global readership generate over 50 million pageviews a month. Mike Krahulik is also known as Gabe, his online persona in the Penny Arcade comics. Krahulik has lent his distinctive art style to promotional comics for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia, Fallout 3, and other video games, as well as advertisements for the Entertainment Software Association.

The epic saga of The Talisman debuts with Issue 0, a never-before-told prequel to the story, to be published by Del Rey Comics in October. The Talisman novel, originally published in 1984, is the story of a teen boy named Jack Sawyer, who can save his dying mother only by retrieving a magical talisman. To find it he must cross back and forth between our world and the frightening and dangerous landscape of its “twinner” counterpart. Issue 0 explores the separate lives of Jack’s father—in our world, and in the mysterious realm known as the Territories—and how evil scheming will forever change Jack’s peaceful life.

The series is being adapted by Robin Furth and illustrated by Tony Shasteen, with regular cover art by Massimo Carnevale and coloring by Nei Ruffino. The Talisman Issue 0 will be available in comic book stores everywhere on October 21, 2009, and The Talisman Issue 1 will hit comics stands on November 18, 2009.

Both The Talisman and its sequel, Black House, are in print with Ballantine Books. Television rights to The Talisman are under development by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.

Group Art Show at Comics & Classics

Comics & Classics of Jacksonville Beach presents its first group show with “Icons: Interpretations of Comic & Gaming Pop Culture.” “Icons” brings together the talents of local artists, as they interpret iconic figures of the comic and gaming industries.

“Icons” will open August 2nd, with a reception for the artists from 7pm to 9pm and run through the end of the month. Open and free to the public, Comics & Classics presents art show opening receptions each first Saturday evening of the month.

Established in October 2007, Comics & Classics specializes in comics and graphic novels, as well as comic, urban and pop culture art. Hosting monthly art shows and art classes, Comics & Classics values the role of the local artist and writer in building a vibrant and unique community.
